Blue Carbon

Blue Carbon

The IPCC says we need to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050 to avoid catastrophic climate change. A healthy ocean is a non-negotiable requirement to drive down atmospheric carbon. However, we still don’t fully understand how the world’s oceans will respond as temperatures rise. How can humanity best make positive interventions to mitigate the combined effects of climate change and overexploitation?

In partnership with The University of Oxford and the OceanMind Global organisation, Trillium is running a multi-year research program starting with a Blue Carbon Super Systems Workshop before COP26 and progressing through accelerated research sprints in 2022.

The outcomes will include policy and technical memos with concrete recommendations, practical scientific machine-learning workflows, and new communities of trans-disciplinary experts spanning the academic, philanthropic and government sectors.

We are seeking engagement from the scientific community, building on our initial discussion to help us design a Super Systems Workshop that is useful for all stakeholders: marine and climate scientists, data and machine learning specialists and policy makers
